TEXTILE PALETTE

Saturday 1st April - Saturday 29th April 2023, The Esmond Gallery, The Warehouse, Clunes.

The theme for this year’s exhibition is Time for Stitch. Navigating the changes to our lifestyle due to restrictions placed on us by the COVID pandemic, enduring long periods of isolation and separation, artists were invited to explore how the quiet times affected them. For many stitching became a lifeline to maintaining a sense of ‘normality’, generating a meaningful focus whilst in lockdown and keeping our motivation to create alive.  With this theme in mind, artists could choose to work on ideas connected to their experience during COVID restrictions, socio, political or economic themes that arose during this time or a project that was worked on highlighting the progressive art form of textile art and/or the sheer enjoyment of stitching.

Submissions considered for this year’s exhibition were varied and included work that explored the relationship to other art disciplines such as printing, upholstery and costumery. Framed and unframed work/s, sculptural pieces, wall hangings, artistic soft furnishings and unique upholstered furniture were considered for inclusion. ONE PERSON’S TRASH

One person's trash is another person's treasure, or so they say.

Domestic objects are often discarded because they are too broken, too unloved or too replaceable. Explore Lauren Matthews' embroidered reinterpretation of the wild world of the online Marketplace.

Embroidery can be subversive, these works subvert the original intent of the intent of the object or seller in many instances, they might make you laugh or may repulse you. Why do people sell such strange things? In a world of waste, when does it go from waste not want not, to just NOT?

 Exhibition dates: 11 February - 5 March 2023.

ART SPACE BALLARAT. 14 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat.

Exhibition works can be viewed online here.

SOFT RAGE

“The only sane reaction to the systemic, disproportionate and endemic levels of men’s violence against women and girls is rage.*
But we will make them think it’s soft.”

A survivor-led, voluntarily curated, art exhibition challenging men’s violence and examining its impact on women and girls.
An online call out asked women of all backgrounds to respond to the provocation- 'Soft Rage-challenging men’s violence". The result of this process is a moving group exhibition of up to 16 women's art from various backgrounds and ages, that showcases the impact of men’s violence, and the resulting empowerment that comes from taking one's story back and making art about it.
